In this programme at AAU Esbjerg, you will study advanced power electronics, electrical machines with strong focus on control engineering, optimisation and reliability. This study programme combines contemporary technologies with classic technologies such as electronics, power electronics, electrical machines, control engineering with artificial intelligence, reliability and maintenance issues. This gives you an understanding of the technologies and scientific disciplines involved in the advanced power electronic area and its application in apparatus and systems.Studying this programme, you learn how to model, analyse, synthesize and develop advanced power electronic apparatus and systems, and you will learn how power electronics and drives interact with externally connected components or systems.

Electronics, electrical machines, instrumentation, automation, power electronics and robots play key roles in our society today. With an education in Applied Industrial Electronics in Esbjerg you can help shape the development of these areas.The bachelor's programme in Applied Industrial Electronics equips you to work as an electronics engineer. In the programme, you will learn how power electronic converters and electrical machines function and how to design and control robots. During the programme, you gain knowledge about embedded systems and about computers and programming, and you learn about signal processing, instrumentation, automation and about mechatronics and robots. In addition to knowledge about how to develop systems, you also learn how to test and validate systems to ensure that they work as intended.

In the present years Arctic scholars have to rethink how we approach and understand the Arctic, not only because the ice is melting, but also because the political and societal scenes are changing rapidly. The specialization in Arctic Studies provides an advanced understanding of the Arctic region and its relationship with the rest of world, seen in historical, social, political and cultural dimensions.
Arctic Studies contribute with new problem-based research and teaching that engages the real-life problems which Arctic communities are facing today. With the UN sustainability goals, a movement has finally taken up pace and will in the future increase the importance of creative and skilled engineers with expertise in biological processes. Studying Bioengineering at AAU Esbjerg, you will obtain skills and competences in Bioenergy, Biotechnology and Bioprocesses. Biotechnology combines biology, chemistry, medicine, and engineering sciences for the discovery, development and production of products ranging from fuels and foods over complex proteins to specialised pharmaceuticals and whole organisms with novel abilities.You will learn how to work with cells and microorganisms. By studying cells' properties alone and in relation to their surroundings, you get a scientific basis for altering the cells' properties.
You can either follow the general study or specialise in a specific area of the field. In addition, you will work with computer programmes that can read and systemise large amounts of genetic data, and computer models that help describe cell functions and understand the mechanisms behind various diseases etc.
Career Opportunities
Completion of the International Programme in Biotechnology at Aalborg University will qualify participants for jobs in research, development, management and production in biotechnological, food and medical industries, as well as in education. Are you interested in energy optimisation, renewable energy in building design, building operations, and indoor climate? As a Master of Science in Technology in Building Energy Design, you will work with reduction and optimisation of energy use in buildings through for example application of renewable energy in both design, construction, and operation.During the study programme, you will gain an integrated understanding of the relation between energy efficient design of buildings and optimal operation concerning indoor climate, energy consumption, and overall economy.You will obtain specialised knowledge about energy design in buildings, and you will be able to create cost-effective solutions with minimal environmental impact in terms of design, construction, and Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems.

AI, vision and sound
You will work with theories and methods about the foundations of Artificial Intelligent (AI) as well as novel algorithms and concepts such as Deep Learning. AI algorithms are to some degree approximating human intelligence, which ultimately means that technology can perform tasks similar to those which humans can perform. The most important human senses are the ability to see and hear, and AI algorithms operating on images/video and sound are therefore central to the future of AI. To this end, this specialisation has a special focus on AI algorithms for processing of images and sound.
Networks and distributed systems
A computer is rarely working in isolation, but as part of a larger system, consisting of other computers such as Internet. To achieve connectivity, we first and foremost need to design and implement a communication network that will interlink different devices. The complexity of communication networks grows, and many cases require a distributed mode of operation, where focus is on system reliability or real-time operation requirements. When you study Energy Engineering, you can choose the specialisation Electrical Power Systems and High Voltage Engineering.In the future, it is expected that the electrical energy production area and the network grid structure will change. More dispersed renewable generation units, such as photovoltaic (PV) systems, biomass systems and small wind turbines will be connected to the grid at the distribution level where also new loads will give interactions to the transport, thermal and gas sectors via electrical vehicles, heat pumps, electrolysers etc.
Furthermore, there is an increasing focus on the connection of large offshore wind farms, reinforcement of the transmission grid and on more HVDC connections at the transmission level. This may offer potential financial, environmental and technical benefits, but it also presents a great number of challenges and uncertainties.
With a Master's Degree in Electrical Power Systems and High Voltage Engineering, you would be able to answer questions like:

The Master of Science in engineering programme Electronic Systems at Aalborg University is a two-year, research-based full-time study programme of 120 ECTS.Electronic Systems is comprised by the overall subjects of signal processing, acoustics, control and automation and communication technologies including radio communication.
You learn about stochastic systems and signals and their mathematical modelling, and how models can be applied in the analysis and design of complex interconnected/distributed systems. In addition, you are taught methods for data acquisition and measurement, including physical sensor construction and applications. As a graduate student in the Environmental Science programme, you will work with projects from different areas of environmental science, for example climate-friendly energy production, sustainable agricultural or industrial production, or development of new and innovative technology for preventing soil, air or water contamination.The programme is cross disciplinary and you will use your knowledge of chemistry, physics, biology and microbiology to investigate and solve environmental challenges in cities, industry, agriculture and nature. This makes it possible for you to work with not only energy from biomass and waste, but also biological air cleaning in industry and animal farming, methods for rapid detection of bacteria in drinking water, biological methods for assessment of water quality in rivers and lakes or improvement of indoor climate in buildings at contaminated soil sites.

Geography at Aalborg University is aimed at analyzing the spatial extent of natural resources and the processes that shape and change the landscape. The environmental problems that arise from using resources such as water, soil and minerals is also at the core of physical geography.The programme in Geography qualifies you to analyze environmental problems in both public and private organizations. You will be able to participate and lead work at all organizational levels in relation to use, protection and planning of natural resources in a global context. The education integrates ecological understanding with fundamental understanding of the governing processes shaping resources of the Earth. The successful candidate will also be able to participate in education and research within sub-disciplines of physical geography.
A part of the study consists of courses and seminars. They may be held as presentations from lecturers, assignments and exercises, or take the form of presentations which the students have prepared.
The second part of the study is project based. Students work in groups on specific projects concerning real world problems within the field of physical geography in which field surveys and experimental work is central.
During your third semester, you have the possibility to do a traineeship at a private or public company/organization or to study a semester at another university abroad. Many students use this possibility to improve their competencies by learning things in a new way, looking at different engineering aspects etc. A traineeship is usually taken within a consultative engineering company.

Global Gender Studies is a profile of the Master of International Relations and will provide students with knowledge about and insight into the area of gender and global studies and will include discussions of specific cases and case studies in which gender and struggles for equality and social justice can be understood from local, regional and global perspectives (including in the context of institutions such as the EU and the UN). Specific emphasis will be placed on the history of gender and equality policies within the fields of development and international relations, on possibilities and limitations of international law and human rights, and on analyses of gender and equality policies in various contexts and parts of the world.Students will also be introduced to gender perspectives on global governance and global democracy. Global governance signals a particular interest in the management of transnational issues by international organizations, other non-state actors and sovereign states with a particular focus on informal processes and activities of governing. Contemporary challenges to global governance include amongst others democratic problems of legitimacy, authority and accountability as well as trends towards increased nationalism, populism and de-democratization. At its core, the teaching in the Information Studies programme focuses on users, information and systems. In particular, most of the teaching is built up around one of the three core areas of information behavior, human-computer interaction, and information systems. Innovation Management gives you knowledge and skills in innovation at community and company level. As a graduate you will be able to plan and execute development projects in both private and public organizations.The Master's Degree in Innovation Management is a two-year double-degree master programme taking place in China at GUCAS, Beijing. The programme is a two-year fulltime international MSc specialization programme for Degree Students leading to a Master Degree in Economics and Business Administration with specialization in Innovation Management. As a Master’s student in Lighting Design you will be working with both daylight and artificial light in the crossing between three scientific fields; Media technology, engineering and architecture. The purpose of the programme is for graduates to have an academic-technological as well as process-related approach to lighting design, and not least, a particular sense in designing with light in virtual and physical spaces. During the programme, you will be working with the interplay between the basic physical elements of light, lighting technologies, digital media, context, human factors and design methods.During the 1st and 2nd semester, you will have courses in the three basic fields; engineering, architecture and media technology. The 3rd semester can either be a specialisation semester, where you choose courses according to the profile you want or you can take an internship in a company. On the 4th semester, you will do your Master’s thesis.

With a degree in Lighting Design, you have very good job opportunities. The lighting design industry has for long advertised for a Master’s programme at a high international level, something which is evident from a vast inquiry made by the innovation network, Danish Light, in 2010-2012. The report concludes: “… since there is already a major need of lighting designers, educational programmes should be prepared quickly”.As a graduate of Lighting Design, you will take part in covering the long-time need for professional lighting designers at consultative engineering companies, designers, architects, developers, media production companies, event companies, etc. Here, lighting designers are needed to create physical and virtual environments in buildings and the outdoors.

The Mechatronic Control Engineering MSc specialisation covers the fundamental scientific principles and technologies used in the design of modern computer-controlled machines and processes, and it puts special focus on the synergies in the design process.Earlier, much functionality was placed in mechanics, using complicated linkages and cams to coordinate motion, but today functionality has shifted to electronics and embedded computers, controlling small actuators, e.g. a car engine which today is packed with electronic control features.
Mechatronic engineers can optimise the design of these new multi-disciplinary systems. This study programme will give you knowledge of proper mechanical design principles, but also embedded computer control hardware and software sensors in order to measure variables of interests and actuation technologies.

Nanotechnology is the discipline of designing, fabricating and controlling materials and components with dimensions on the nanoscale, i.e. from 1 to 100 nm. By constructing materials and devices atom by atom or molecule by molecule, it is possible to obtain decisive control over their properties and develop unique materials with new and unexpected properties for applications within communication, data storage and data processing, (bio)sensors, catalysis or medicine just to mention a few areas.Students of the programme are educated in an innovative, dynamic and challenging environment through a combination of research-based teaching, team-based project work and a high degree of interaction with industrial partners.
The University of Aalborg offers state-of-the-art laboratory facilities including a class 100 clean room holding modern equipment for micro and nanoscale fabrication and characterization (www.nanolab.aau.dk) as well as a new, fully equipped biochemistry lab, a class 1 area and state-of-the-art biophysical investigation equipment.

In the MSc programme Sustainable Energy Engineering with specialisation in Offshore Energy Systems, you will study technologies related to different kinds of energy systems such as offshore wind turbines, oil rigs, wave energy, etc.The programme covers various technologies for energy transfer, harvesting and control of offshore energy systems. As a student of the study programme in Power Electronics and Drives (Energy Engineering), you will study efficient and intelligent energy conversion employing power electronic technology and electrical machines. The objectives of the syllabus are to provide you with:- Detailed understanding of the operation, function and interaction between various components and sub-systems used in power electronic converters, electric machines and adjustable-speed drives
- Knowledge enabling design, modelling, simulation and synthesis of power converter-based systems used for conversion of electric energy
- Experience in design of controllers for PED systems using classical and modern control theory
- Experience in the practical implementation of controllers using for example digital signal processors
- To enable you to develop, construct, operate and test power electronic converters and drives in the laboratory
Experimental work plays a key role in the programme. A large, well-equipped laboratory is available, offering you excellent opportunities for constructing and testing prototypes of electronic systems and electric machines. Facilities for testing power electronic components, converters and high power systems are also at your disposal.

The MPBL program is a online 2-year part-time problem based learning program, exemplary for its own contents and delivered as on-line distance education. The challenge of sustainable design is to develop products and networks, which can transform systems of consumption and production to be more sustainable.The Master’s programme in Sustainable Design combines sustainable product design with tools from innovation theory, practice theory and user-oriented design. Visualisation and experimentation are important strategies to develop new innovative solutions, which can overcome system dependencies and achieve sustainable system transformation in various societal sectors.
You will engage in challenging design-oriented problem solving in collaboration with NGO´s, companies, public institutions and professional groups. Perhaps you design and develop future relief tents, robot vacuum cleaners or bike airbags. You can also work with rehabilitation of older, energy-efficient mobility or waste systems in cities.
During the first three semesters you will learn:

The Master’s programme in Techno-Anthropology combines competence in carrying out anthropological studies of techno-science cultures with technological insight. The programme will focus on how l with collaboration between technical experts in different settings and other stakeholder groups, e.g. consultancy firms, R&D departments at multinational companies, advisory bodies, international organisations, public institutions, think tanks, NGOs, or universities.You work theoretically and empirically on how such collaborations can be turned into sustainable technological innovation and responsible decision-making regarding new technologies. You also use anthropological theory and methods to study how technology is used, and how it influences users.
During the first two semesters, you get an overview of different theoretical approaches to the Science/Technology - Culture/Policy/Society interface. You will get acquainted with Science and Technology Studies, Post-normal Science, organization theory, as well as get insight into how ethical reflections can entangle concrete cultural settings. During the second year of the programme, you will conduct a major fieldwork in an organisation that works with science and/or technology.

The MSc specialisation in Thermal Energy and Process Engineering is primarily focused on thermal energy technologies and systems, and it covers advanced aspects of energy system modelling, heat and mass transfer, control engineering and experimental work with focus on different components and energy system aspects.The themes for the first three semesters are particularly focused on thermal energy, process engineering and in-depth understanding of the technologies and scientific disciplines involved in energy conversion, utilisation and transport. The education is multidisciplinary and covers the integration of general engineering disciplines, such as thermal systems, fluid- and aerodynamics, control engineering and electrical engineering.
The objectives of the syllabus are:

The Msc programme in Urban Design with a specialization in Urban Architecture takes its point of departure in a number of current and future challenges in the field of urban development and urban design. Do you want to create the cities of the future? Through the master's programme in Urban Design, you learn to apply professional design methods, working analytically with complex issues concerning urbanity, urban planning, the city's space and the development of cities, nodes, and mobility.You can help create the city of the future. As an urban designer, you work with challenges related to urban development and urban planning. You help to shape cities, creating new spaces for people, and new ways of moving around these cities.
Over the course of the Urban Design programme, you learn to include cities’ residents and societal issues on the drawing board when, together, we work with the city's architecture. The programme thus focuses on designing cities for and with people.
Career Opportunities
Urban designers with the ability to work with the organisation of building development and the transformation of urban spaces are needed everywhere to give people experiences and exciting and new urban areas to live and move around in. For example, Urban Design graduates can be employed by:- private architectural firms
- public sectors with a focus on urban planning in practice, e.g. municipalities and regions
- design studios
- consulting engineering firms.

The Master's Programme in Urban Planning and Management enables candidates to understand and cope with the challenges of urban development in the 21st century through a unique integration of engineering and social science.Urbanism and urban life is a primary mediating force in transforming economies, technologies, social interaction and the environment. Cities and urban regions encompass a complex mixture of social activities, innovation, flows, movement and networked technical infrastructures, and as such urbanism is a dynamic socio-technical phenomenon.
Managing the challenges of urban policy and planning in the global era requires an interdisciplinary approach that combines technical, social, economic, and environmental knowledge. It takes imagination and creativity as well as solid socio-technical knowledge and skill to envision, plan, and manage urban transformations that underpin and support goals of economic, social, democratic and ecological development. The future development of cities and urban regions requires urban policy makers and planners with an understanding of global development trends as well as of local-regional contexts and identities.
The unique interdisciplinary approach of the Masters programme, where engineering and social science theories and methodologies are combined and fused, offer students a state-of-the-art solution oriented approach to this global and ever-changing field.

The Masters Programme in Urban Planning and Management gives graduates the necessary skills and competences to apply for and manage a wide range of different jobs – on a national as well as international level. These include among others:- Consultant in major international consulting companies

To enter this master programme you must have a relevant bachelor degree. The bachelor in Urban, Energy and Environmental Planning at Aalborg University, Denmark gives you direct access to the programme. As the population of the world increases and people gather in cities more and more, the need for a proper water supply and water drainage intensifies from day to day. Because this need is so fundamental, the water sector is almost independent of the actual economical and political situation which makes an education as engineer in Water and Environment an excellent long-term investment with fine employment possibilities all around the world.Although the pipes for water supply and drainage are hidden below the soil surface, it is worth remembering that this part of the infrastructure of the society has the highest economical value of them all; more than roads, railroads, electricity etc.

Description
The wind industry is developing rapidly; many new technologies are being applied. New problems are being revealed due to the large penetration of wind power systems into the network grid. Some of the wind installations will be very large off-shore wind farm, which should act as power plants and should support the stability and power balance in the network grid.In the future it is also expected that a lot of new small wind turbines will be installed, maybe as plug and play units at household level. These wind turbines could be both vertical and horizontal axis turbines. This will provide many new challenges for wind power engineers in the future.The specialisation in Wind Power Systems (Energy Engineering) focuses on the electrical aspects of wind power systems ensuring an excellent education in subjects such as generators, power electronics, control engineering and power system technology related to wind power applications. This will provide an excellent background for engineering employment in the wind industry.
You will study topics such as:
- How do we ensure electric network stability when a large wind turbine is connected to the system?
- Should direct current (DC) or alternating current (AC) transmission be applied in offshore wind parks of the future?
- What type of generator provides the highest efficiency in a given application?
- How can a wind turbine be protected against lightning?
- How do you design a micro electricity supply network comprising a wind turbine, energy storage and loads?
The teaching of the programme is carried out in an innovative, dynamic and challenging environment through a combination of research-based courses, team-based project work and a high degree of interaction with industrial partners and energy supply companies. The teaching is carried out in English because many international students are enrolled in the study programme.
