Description

In the future, up to 70-80% of the world population will live in cities, and thus it is important to handle the challenges they pose. It is significant that planning is done across sectors and professions likeenergy, water, waste, urban planning, etc. 

The Master´s Programme In Sustainable Cities will cover issues of engineering such as waste, energy, water resources and transport, as well as political science, green growth and different forms of impact assessment. The graduates from this Master of Science will be educated in being capable of creating the framework for the Sustainable Cities of the future, where economic, social and environmental purposes are integrated in new ways.

The programme integrates working with fulfilment of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Some of the subjects covered in this programme are: Tools and approaches to sustainable cities, Challenges and planning for sustainable cities, Theories of Science and Research Designs, Politics, planning and governance, Structures and systems of the city, Economic, social and environmental assessment.

It is a priority of the programme that you have the opportunity to work with external partners, for instance in your semester projects, which can be carried out in cooperation with authorities, companies, NGOs, etc. This way you get to work on real life problems, preparing you for your professional carreer.

Career Opportunities  

Graduates from the programme are expected to have many possible career paths, for example within:
  • Energy companies and local authorities, creating the basis for renewable energy systems in cities.
  • Local authorities, companies and consultancies working with mobility management in urban areas.
  • NGOs and research centres working with behavioral change in users and comsumers in relation to sustainable construction or energy efficient products.

Admission  

To enter this Master´s programme you must have a relevant Bachelor´s degree. The bachelor in Urban, Energy and Environmental Planning at Aalborg University gives you direct access to the programme. Other relevant bachelor degrees could be within engineering, geography, politics or social science. However, all applications for the master programme are evaluated individually and the relevancy of the bachelor degree is evaluated through this process.

In addition, documentation is required verifying that your proficiency in English is at an acceptable level.

Tuition

There is a tuition fee for all full-time degree students who hold a citizenship from outside EU/EAA/Switzerland.

Students within an exchange programme are not required to pay tuition.
