Description

Do you enjoy working with mechanics, and do you dream about working with mechanical systems of all shapes and sizes in relation to industrial production? The increase in global competition creates a demand for better efficiency and functionality as well as engineers who can develop advanced mechanical systems, production equipment, machines and other products. As a mechanical engineer you can be a part of the industrial future. If this sounds interesting to you, then the specialisation in Design of Mechanical Systems may be just right for you. This specialisation combines theory and practice in relation to design and development of industrial products, which teaches you to combine you technical and creative skills to achieve an expansive knowledge about the design and development process.During the programme, you are introduced to a wide range of design tools essential for a mechanical engineer. The classical engineering disciplines such as mechanics of materials, continuum mechanics, and variational methods are combined with courses on the latest computer based simulation tools like finite element methods, optimisation methods and multi body system analysis methods. The use of composite materials for advanced structural applications is one of the key areas of the programme, and you will learn how to use these for engineering design purposes.

The programme offers courses and projects within the following fields:
  • Stress and deformation analyses of load carrying structural elements
  • Continuum mechanics (theory of elasticity, plasticity, and micro mechanics)
  • Finite element methods
  • Fracture mechanics and fatigue
  • Energy and variational methods with applications
  • Multi body system analysis
  • Engineering design optimization
  • Mechanics of composite materials and structures
  • Engineering design of mechanical systems

Career Opportunities

As a graduate from the Design of Mechanical Systems programme, you will typically be employed in a company where you can take part in the technological development and research and where you understand technical management of developmental projects.

Examples of companies, where you can be employed, are:
• Consultancies
• Industrial companies
• A part of a company’s research and development department
• In the academic world as a PhD student
