Group work makes studying more exciting

”I belong to a really good group. We are not just together when work on the project; we also hang out in our spare time so I have managed to get a social network rather quickly. This way of working is highly motivating for me and makes studying more exciting,” says the Hungarian Mózes Adorján Mikó (25), who studies ’medialogy’ at Aalborg University – and would like to stay in Denmark after graduation.

Originally, Mózes Adorján Mikó, who is 25, studied biology in Hungary's capital Budapest where he grew up. However, studying biology did not really agree with him, so he decided to change track and try a completely different education abroad where he would be able to work more creatively.

Since he is interested in developing computer games and would like to work in gaming, he decided to study 'medialogy' at Aalborg University. The bachelor programme, which he began to follow in September 2015, is about man-machine interaction, media technology, interaction design, sound, graphics – and creativity.

Teachers and students communicate in English, and the education prepares students for jobs in the media and entertainment business.

Group work prepares students for real-life jobs

The subject matter as well as the way of studying fits Mózes Adorján Mikó perfectly.

”In Hungary, students most often work alone, with a strong focus on reading books and memorizing the content before the exams. So it is hard to become part of any kind of student community. But here at Aalborg University, we work in groups where we develop the necessary tools to acquire knowledge and find solutions on our own. We do projects together. This way of working is highly motivating for me and makes studying more exciting,” says Mózes Adorján Mikó.

Every semester there is a new project where groups of students develop a product and test it on a user group.

”This way of working is a realistic preparation for the kind of scenarios I will face on the labour market,” says Mózes Adorján Mikó.

At Aalborg University, Mózes has met students from many European countries, e.g. Poland, the Czech Republic, Germany and Denmark. And there are social benefits to group work:

”I belong to a really good group. We are not just together when work on the project; we also hang out in our spare time so I have managed to get a social network rather quickly this way. It is also easy to meet other students at the various social events at the university,” says Mózes Adorján Mikó.

Will stay and work in Denmark after the studies

After two semesters in Aalborg, Mózes Adorján Mikó is so happy about his choice of education that he already plans to continue with the master's programme in medialogy at Aalborg University when he completes his bachelor's degree.

In his graduate studies, he will specialize in gaming. He has begun to learn Danish in his spare time, and he would like to stay on in Denmark and find a job here when he has completed his studies.

”The Danes are tolerant and trusting. Let me give you an example: I have seen a Danish couple leave their baby in a stroller in the garden while they both have something to do inside. The Danes trust each other, and that is something I really like,” says Mózes Adorján Mikó.
