University College Absalon


UNIVERSITY COLLEGE ABSALON is a regional institution, covering the geographical area of Region Zealand. University College Absalon has approximately 8,500 students and 650 employees at seven campuses in the cities of Roskilde, Slagelse, Sorø, Næstved, Holbæk, Kalundborg, Vordingborg and Nykøbing Falster. All campuses are easily reached from Copenhagen, the travelling time varying from 30 minutes to 1 ½ hours by train.  

With eleven professional bachelor degree programs, two of which are also taught in English, University College Absalon is the central driver for education and growth in the region. Degrees currently offered in English are Bachelor of Engineering in Biotechnology and International Honour’s Degree in Teaching. Furthermore, there is an increasing number of exchange students for the renowned international semesters or for traineeships in the respective professions.  

University College Absalon has close partnerships with the workplaces that graduates will join. This ensures high quality traineeship opportunities as well as a constant development of the programs to provide graduates with the needed skills to join and navigate in an ever-changing job market. It is a priority to train students with professional qualifications and social competences that can ensure high standards in the public as well as the private sector.  

As of August 1, 2017, the institution changed its name from University College Zealand to University College Absalon. Bishop Absalon, who played a central role in the history of Denmark and especially the region of Zealand during the Middle Ages, inspires the name.

Our Bachelor of Engineering in Biotechnology combines biology, chemistry and science of engineering.

During the studies you will learn to apply in depth  knowledge of biochemical and biotechnological processes according to production of drugs (medicine), food industry and environmental challenges.

You will get acquainted with methods used in the field of biotechnology of industrial production.

You will also obtain knowledge of engineering principles relevant to the processing of materials by microorganisms (such as bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa and viruses) or plant and animal cells to create useful products or industrial processes.

Career Opportunities   

As a Bachelor of Engineering in Biotechnology you acquire a wide range of career opportunities in the global job market - in Denmark or abroad.

You will obtain competences within development and production using biotechnological processes. It could be solving tasks within the fields of health science, nutrition, environment and energy, within areas covering scope of food and medicine production, environmental and energy sectors.

You will qualify for a position as operational and production engineer working with process control based on chemical, physical and biological analysis. Control, regulation and optimization of production processes could also be one of your areas of responsibility.

Moreover, having this education, you can work as a process, trial and development engineer within research and development of new setups in the area of most recent biological production and wastewater purification processes.

About the Degree

The degree focuses on biotechnology, for example how cells are used as small factories in the production of pharma and foodstuffs, or how they are used in purification of wastewater or converting waste into energy - biofuels. You will gain theoretical knowledge within biotechnology and will be working with the following disciplines:
  • Cell and microbiology
  • Biotechnology and protein chemistry
  • General and technical chemistry
  • Mathematics and statistics
Moreover, you will get acquainted with a line of technical subjects such as chemical unit operations, practical regulation, fermentation and chemical reaction engineering. From the very beginning of your education, you will start bridging theory and practice, integrating obtained theoretical knowledge with real-life professional practice. Absalon's Bachelor of Engineering programme is based on the close cooperation with local companies – bio manufactory market leaders as Novo Nordisk, Novozymes, Equinor, Ørsted etc. The last year of studies includes a mandatory internship, elective courses and bachelor thesis which provide you with a unique opportunity to tailor these activities in close collaboration with the companies.

·         A Danish upper secondary school leaving certificate 
·         The Danish/French Baccalaureat
The European Baccalaureate
·         The International Baccalaureate 
·         The Option Internationale du Baccalaureat 
Another foreign qualifying examination certificate that can be equated with a Danish upper secondary school leaving certificate.

·         Mathematics: corresponding to Danish A-level
Physics: corresponding to Danish B-level or Geoscience corresponding to Danish A-level

·         Chemistry: corresponding to Danish B-level or Biotechnology corresponding to Danish A-level

Kalundborg is a charming town and one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Denmark. Here you can see the five-tower church wich is a unique architectural monument.

In the "modern Kalundborg" you can go shopping and take at break at one of the cafés. Kalundborg is Denmark's third largest cruise port which means that the town is well visited by Englishmen who enjoy our hospitality.

International Honours Degree in Teaching

University College Absalon offers an international honour’s degree as part of the Professional Bachelor’s Degree in Teacher Education.

The increased number of international schools worldwide is creating a high demand for teachers with intercultural competences. As a response to this demand, University College Absalon has developed an honour’s degree with an international focus.

About the Degree

Your opportunities: All students must apply to the Danish Teacher Education program that authorizes you to teach in the Danish primary and lower secondary schools. Once you are enrolled, you have two options for pursuing an international profile:
  1. You can take individual modules in English from the honour’s degree. It will be noted on your diploma that you have obtained intercultural competences from these modules. The rest of your classes will be in Danish.
  2. You can apply to complete the full honour’s degree as part of your Danish Teacher Education degree.


The general admission requirements for international students include one of the following international certificates:
  • A Danish upper secondary school leaving certificate (STX, HF, HHX, HTX, EUX, GIF)
  • The Danish/French Baccalauréat (DFB)
  • The European Baccalaureate (EB)
  • The International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • The Option Internationale du Baccalauréat (OIB)
  • Another foreign qualifying examination certificate that can be equated with a Danish upper secondary school leaving certificate.

A grade average of minimum 7.0, on the Danish grading scale or a score from an interview of minimum 30 point.


If your average is below 7.0 on Danish grade scale or if the average is unknown or your average cannot be converted to the Danish grade scale or you get a positive individual competence assessment, you must participate in an interview to qualify for admission to the program. If you are to attend an interview you will receive an e-mail with a link to our booking system where you can book an interview. You will receive the e-mail after we have assessed your application.

Other basis for admission

If you do not meet the official admission requirements but have other qualifications that can be considered as equivalent, you can apply for admission with special permission through individual competence assessment.

We recommend that you attach a curriculum vitae (CV) to your application. Do not attach a motivated application letter to your application.

The selection criteria for The International Honours Degree in Teaching is:
  • English corresponding to Danish A-level
  • Pass the special 3-hour entrance examinations to The International Honours Degree in Teaching. This test assesses both your skills in written English and your ability to formulate a well-structured argument.

Vordingborg is a municipality in Region Zealand on the southeast coast of the island of Zealand (Sjælland) in south Denmark. The town of Vordingborg has a population of 11,982 inhabitants (2015).The ruins of Vordingborg Castle, the old royal castle which was built around 1364, is the town's most famous attraction. The only fully remaining part of the castle, the 26 meter tall Goose Tower (Gåsetårnet), is the symbol of the city. Vordingborg town is at the seaside and has two small marinas. The local beach is well visited during the summer months.
