Copenhagen, Best City in the World
“It’s a city that feels good, and that’s not something you can say about many cities today. The Danes get it right on so many levels. Copenhagen has a vibrancy to it. The food culture is extraordinary and life seems easy, uncomplicated and fun. Who wouldn’t want to live in a city where you can swim in the harbour?” said judge and actor Eddie Redmayne who is part of the multi-skilled, international panel who selected Copenhagen as the world’s best city.
The shortlist for the Best City category included Beirut, Los Angeles, Miami, Taipei and Copenhagen. The Wallpaper magazine’s motivation for shortlisting Copenhagen highlights the city’s buzzing creativity, and reads:
“The Danish capital is growing increasingly extrovert and adventurous. In Vesterbro, the meatpacking district of Kødbyen is now an art hub; in Nørrebro, gourmet destinations share the same streets as alehouses; and in Christianshavn, Papirøen is a fertile enclave of creativity. The latest wave of creatives, architects and chefs has fuelled a renaissance, and New Nordic is the cuisine and design movement of the moment.”
Denmark – a great place to live
Numerous international studies place Danish inhabitants at the top of happiness and general satisfaction rankings.
This apparent satisfaction with life is often credited to 'soft factors' – culture, leisure time and family life - as opposed to 'hard values' such as money or material wealth. This is due in part to a well-established welfare system. According to UNDP’s Human Development Index, Denmark is one of the most liveable countries in the world.
Wallpaper is an internally leading design and style magazine with readers in 93 countries. The Design Awards are now in its twelfth year and the magazine rounds-up everything that is excellent and celebrates the year’s best places, designers, architects and designs. Other Danish features which were shortlisted for awards are BeoSound Moment from Bang & Olufsen for “Best Domestic Design”, and Drinkable Perfumes by the Danish chef Kille Enna for “Life Enhancer”.
