Description

As a student of Bioinformatics you will learn to solve biological problems by means of mathematical and statistical calculation methods by use of a computer.

Bioinformatics is an extremely active, interdisciplinary field of research. Over the past five decades, biological research has revolutionised our understanding of life's molecular basis. Research has evolved from the 1940's discovery that genetic information is coded within DNA, until today, when the completed DNA sequences for a number of species  – including humans – are known.

These, as well as other important discoveries, have permanently changed the biological sciences. Not too long ago, genes were studied one at a time. Now, experimental technologies allow us the chance to investigate all of an organism's genes, as well as their levels of activity and complex interactions.

Bioinformatics is indispensable in the management and analysis of increasingly vast quantities of data generated by these experiments. The field aims to tackle biological hurdles using mathematical and statistical computational methods. Modern biological and medical research are virtually impossible without bioinformatics.

During the course of the programme you will learn to:
  • control situations at work and in developments that are complex, unpredictable and require new solutions
  • individually initiate and complete collaborations and take professional responsibility
  • find, extract, interpret and evaluate large dataset in complex biological processes
  • individually take responsibility for your own scientific evolution and specialization

Career Opportunities

Many MSc graduates in bioinformatics find employment in biotech companies. A large proportion of the graduates continue on to a PhD programme.

Admission

Please read about the specific admission requirements that apply if you have a relevant Bachelor degree from a university in Denmark or abroad.  In addition, the Faculty may admit applicants who, after a thorough assessment, are deemed to possess educational qualifications equivalent to those required from applicants holding specific Bachelor degrees.

In addition, documentation may be required verifying that your proficiency in English is at a specified level. Read about the language requirements of University of Copenhagen.

Please read about how and when to apply to University of Copenhagen. Application takes place through an online application portal.

To find out whether the level of your foreign certificate or diploma satisfies the general entry requirements, you should contact Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen directly at the following email address: studentservices@science.ku.dk .

A list of the most commonly recognized exams and diplomas can be found at the Danish Agency for Higher Education → http://ufm.dk/recognition

Exchange students should contact their home institution for information on application procedures and deadlines.

Tuition

There is a tuition fee for all full-time degree students from outside the EU, EEA, or Switzerland. Students within an exchange programme are not required to pay tuition.

North Campus

Description

North Campus

With the Copenhagen University Hospital (Rigshospitalet) as the next door neighbour, the Faculty of Science and Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences are very well placed in the North Campus. North Campus is an ideal setting for interdisciplinary reseach fields. Massive investments in research infrastructure, including the construction of the Niels Bohr Building and the Maersk Building,  are currently being made to develop the area around the North Campus into Copenhagen Science City. North Campus is very centrally located and transport links are excellent. Many students and teacher  also use their bike, and biking in Copenhagen is easy and convenient.
