Musical Accompaniment for Dance

Master (1 year) of Musical Accompaniment for Dance, 60 ECTS
Humanities, social sciences, communication and arts

Institution The Danish National School of Performing Arts
Duration 2 years

The programme is targeted towards professional musicians or applicants with a conservatory music education wishing to specialise within this area.

The education takes place in cooperation with The Royal Danish Music Conservatory which also takes care of teaching the subject areas; composition and musical history.

About the Degree

The programme is a part time study of two years. There is a certain degree of flexibility depending on the background and experience of the individual student.

Depending on their backgrounds, the students follow several courses, some of which are obligatory. Some of these courses take place in collaboration with the Masters in Dance Partnership education.

Most of the teaching takes place in the daily technique classes. The student begins by observing and consequently gathers and builds material which is tried and tested in the studio under the guidance of an experienced musician and the technique teacher. A distinction is made between the various techniques; improvisation, classical contemporary technique, ballet and newer techniques, all of them resulting in a final test, in order for the student to gain in depth insight into and experience within the various forms of relations between music and dance.

The Musical Accompaniment for Dance programme is primarily taught in English. However, the student can be expected to participate in joint activities with other students from the school once or twice a year, where Danish will be the primary language.

Every second year The Danish National School of Performing Arts offers admittance to 4-5 students for the Musical Accompaniment for Dance education. All new students are admitted based on an audition and in order to be invited, applicants must
  • hold a bachelor degree in music or equivalent and/or a minimum of two years of documented work experience as a professional musician and
  • play piano or percussion as main or secondary instrument.
  • play a piece of music of their own choice on their chosen instrument
Applicants who do not have these qualifications may apply for dispensation which will be granted if the individual applicant’s qualifications are considered equivalent to the formal qualifications stated above. There is no exemption from the audition itself.

For information about admission procedures and how to apply for the programme find out more here.

Please notice, that all applicants must pay a fee of 500 DKR when applying for the Danish National School of Performing Arts. The money covers part of the school’s expenses for the auditions. When applying online you will be redirected to a payment site.

There is a tuition fee for all full-time degree students who hold a citizenship from outside of EU/EEA/Switzerland.

However, payment of tuition fees is not required if the students are applying for admission via an exchange agreement, have a permanent residence permit, a temporary residence permit with the possibility of achieving permanent residency, or have received a scholarship from the state.
