This interdisciplinary course approaches the relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and cinema in two interconnected ways. The first part of the course traces the fictional portrayals of AI in contemporary films that cut across various genres (horror, science fiction, romantic drama, animation), focusing on themes such as the turbulent relationship between human and machine, otherness, posthumanism, surveillance, and technological control (and chaos) that form the core concerns of these narratives. We will interrogate the ways that filmic imaginations of androids, cyborgs, and (self-aware) computing systems are, on the one hand, a prism through which contemporaneous socio-political issues are explored, and on the other hand, harbingers of the ubiquity of AI technologies in our lives, prompting the urgency for society to closely engage with the opportunities and challenges presented by an AI-driven future.

The second part of the course will focus on an applied aspect of cinema’s relationship with AI: the emergent uses of AI and machine learning algorithms in the film industry, ranging from the business dimension (e.g. film marketing, predicting box office performance, distribution and recommender systems) to the creative dimension (e.g. screenwriting, casting, editing). Through an examination of current case studies and ongoing debates about the applications of AI in the creative audiovisual arts, we will deal with questions of creativity, diversity, bias, and the ethical and social implications for representation, creative labour, and audiences.
