Today, vision is heavily dominated by digitization and computation: Not only are the majority of images that we look at digitally created and/or presented, they are also circulated and modified digitally, and this influences how we handle and understand them. Images no longer just represent and mediate, but also intervene in everyday life, by watching us and by poking, nudging, and guiding our activities and movements (e.g., when your newest smartphone ‘stare’ at your face and unlocks or buys on your behalf; when a map application ‘take’ you to your destination; and when license plate readers on police cars automatically ‘look’ at other cars and alert the police officer about matters to investigate).
The course introduces students to various aspects of how we make use of technology when we create, circulate and use images today. The main focus of the course is how contemporary image technologies shape us culturally.
