Architecture in Urban Context
The Master, Architecture in Urban Context is conducted at the Departement of Town and Building at the Royal Copenhagen Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture.
The Department of Town and Building operates with the notion that thinking and making takes place simultaneously. In this way the architectural scope (programming), analytical proposals and designs are created in an alternation between production and reflection.
A central concept in the department’s work is ‘scale-sliding’ according to which architectural conditions and proposals are studied by developing projects on various scales in simultaneous projects. Working between scales related to the body and scales related to the city is a fundamental part of the department’s aim to create architecture within an urban context.

First year’s syllabus focuses on experimentation where making is essential. Experiments may involve designs, which are developed based on individual thematic or programmatic interests.
During the second year, thinking and reflection take a higher priority as research oriented knowledge serves as a basis for the students’ diploma programmes and projects.
Well-known and classical drawing is used as part of the programme, but where needed the programme does not deter the invention of suitable drawing media that allow for the idea to transform into physical form.
To a considerable extent, development of projects unfold in the school’s workshop.
Each year, the department travels to a carefully chosen city abroad. Participation is obligatory as it is an essential element of the master’s programme. The fieldwork provides basic site specific information, forming a point of departure of the individual programming/scope.
Entry Requirements
Students with a Bachelor’s degree (or the equivalent) from a state-recognised Danish or foreign school of architecture may apply for admission. Foreign students are eligible for admission if their qualifications are assessed as being comparable to the Danish entrance qualifications.

Design in Architectural Contexts
The programme will explore the design of the overall landscape, urban planning and building design, ranging from the macro level of how a building integrates with its surrounding landscape, to a micro level of architecture, small constructions, furniture, graphics, lighting etc.
Focus is directed onto the potential tension field between the design related object and the architectural whole, and between design processes and the work.
The programme emphasizes collaboration with other educational programmes and corporate partners.

During the 2-year Master’s programme, the student will train to become an architect within the specialty field of Design in Architectural Contexts.
The Master’s programme is offered by Department 11 (1:1), the design programme at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of Architecture and is laid out as three mandatory semesters centering on the main spaces of architecture: Landscape, city and dwelling.
The semesters encompass course and project phases, as well as an independent final examination project of a total of 120 ects points.
The programme has the following components:

Fourth semester: Self-programming – Master’s project in the field of architectural design
The project work phase puts equal focus on process and proposal-making. Thus, the department offers courses in programme-writing, academic and architectural, hands-on methods and analysis tools, project development and communication in conjunction with project counseling at the drawing tables.
In order to ensure the anchoring of the design component, the Master’s programme also includes courses in design theory and design history, among others, as well as other design specific, tool-based disciplines.
