Name: Information Architecture
Type: MSc Programme
Duration: 2 years
European transfer credits: 120 ECTS
Language: English
About the Programme
On the Information Architecture programme, you learn to design and develop contents and structure in various information systems, for example, websites and software programmes.
You study subjects like information ecology, categorisation, knowledge organisation and rhetoric, where you learn how to communicate appropriately and effectively to specific target groups.
You will work with the association between form and contents and learn the terms 'persuasive design', which deals with how you motivate users to use information systems in a specific way, and 'strategies for change'.
Persuasive design's starting point is the user and the situation he or she is in. An important part of the work in developing information systems is, therefore, also about researching and understanding the tasks, work routines, attitudes and needs the user of the system has.
Teaching is organised, first and foremost, as problem-oriented project work. There will also be lectures and classroom instruction. A portion of the lessons takes place in cooperation with businesses.

Master in Problem Based Learning in Engineering and Science, MPBL
This programme aims at developing an experimental practice that will improve the quality of education in the scientific and engineering programmes.
The programme gives you competence to lead innovative education and education experiments.
Name: Master in Problem Based Learning in Engineering and Science, MPBL
Type: Master's programme
Duration: 2 years on a part-time basis
European transfer credits: 60 ECTS
Entry Requirements: As a minimum a bachelor's degree and 3 years of professional experience
Tuition fee: DKK 71,000
The MPBL is a two-year part-time programme and organised as technology-supported distance education.
The overall aim of the programme is for the participants to gain competencies of being in charge of innovative teaching and educational experiments leading to continuous improvement of the quality of engineering education.
The experiments should be based on problem-based learning and aimed at groups of students with diverse backgrounds, for example with regard to sex, class, cultural background and age.
There are two study activities: Project and project courses. The project may involve: project work individually or in groups, portfolio work, work-based learning activities etc. The project courses are supporting the project work.
The programme consists of 3 modules:
Module 1: Development of Teaching Competencies (15 ECTS):
The subjects of the first module give a systematic introduction to fundamental concepts, theories and methods within the areas of learning theories, didactics and active learning. This more general knowledge has to be linked to experiences from own teaching practice which is the reason why the participants have to prepare a personal teaching portfolio. Participants have to prepare a personal teaching portfolio which contains a self-critical reflection on and assessment of own teaching practice, seen in the light of the concepts, theories and methods presented in the project unit courses. The teaching portfolio should also contain reflections on future innovative teaching experiments in own teaching practice.
Module 2: Design of PBL Curriculum (15 ECTS):
During this module, the participants will plan and design educational experiments which include one or more elements from different Problem Based Learning models. The courses of the module support the development of process competences, the use of scientific methods and the integration of an intercultural perspective in education. In collaboration with team members the participants have to design and plan an educational experiment, adapted to the teaching and/or institutional context and the given group of students. The experiment should be based on essential Problem Based Learning principles, focusing upon the development of process competences of students and possibly including a diversity perspective concerning the group of students.
Module 3: Master's Thesis (30 ECTS):
The Master's thesis takes the form of a problem based project where the problem area of the project may aim at supporting the participants developing
- either specialised knowledge within one or a few chosen areas of the professional field of educational development
- or broader insights into the field concerning theories and methods as well as central elements and the relations between such elements.
The project courses are examined via the project exam which may be an individual or a group exam dependent upon the project work. The study courses are examined independently via a final oral exam based on the submitted mini-projects. Skype or Adobe Connect will be used for the exams.
See prospective classes in the Danish description of the course.
Educational Institutions
The programme is offered by UNESCO International Centre for Engineering Education - Centre for Problem Based Learning (UCPBL) which is hosted by the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Aalborg University. They also offer single subject courses.
Duration
The programme lasts 4 semesters, or 2 years. It is rated at 60 ECTS or a full-time students work in one year. Module 1 and 2 each last 1 semester, module 3 lasts 2 semesters. You can enrol in the full Master's programme, or you can participate in a single module only.
The programme is mainly based on technology-supported distance teaching.

Risk and Safety Management
The focus of Risk and Safety Management is the analysis of potential risks in projects and systems and the establishment of procedures to manage failures and emergencies.
The programme provides you with scientific knowledge of the theory, tools and practices used in the management of risk and safety. These are typically drawn from the fields of engineering, health science and business administration.
Facts
Name: Risk and Safety Management
Type: MSc Programme
Duration: 2 years
European transfer credits: 120 ECTS
Language: English
About the programme
Today, humans interact with many complex systems which in turn interact with each other. This increase in complexity calls for rigorous risk and safety management tools. Risk is often expressed as the consequence of an event combined with the likelihood of it occurring.
Risk and safety management can apply to many fields, but typically involves financial, environmental or health and safety systems. An important aspect of risk and safety management is to make decisions regarding risk and safety issues that affect entire organisations or individual processes. Decision making is often supported by risk analysis based on risk modelling and involves communicating information to the different stakeholders.
You study subjects such as:
- Risk management in projects and systems
- The nature of probability, uncertainty and stochastic processes
- Decision making tools, such as Bayesian networks, decision trees, cost-benefit analyses and Monte Carlo simulations
- Ethical considerations when working with the health and safety of people
- Model/tool limitations
- Evacuation strategies
- The legal aspects of risk and safety management
Teaching varies between lectures and classroom instruction. In addition, there is often project work together with other students. Students are encouraged to participate in class discussions.
