DescriptionPhotonics is a well-established field of technologies and physics that is essential in our everyday life as well as a research topic for novel key enabling technologies for the society of the future. Examples of well-established existing applications of photonics are lasers and optical communication whereas future applications include sensing for example within biophotonics, energy and health.
Photonics is a very active field of research including basic research on photonics components, novel materials, laser and light sources as well as new optical methods for example within sensing. Photonics is not only a topic of research but also an engineering field that is being increasingly used within the industry. Many of the future applications include cross disciplinary knowledge, for example to predict optical properties of synthesized materials using advance mathematics, to optimize optical measurements of biochemical samples, or to interpret the reflected optical signal from a polluted atmosphere.
Career OpportunitiesThe career opportunities as a Master of Science in Engineering within photonics are manifold due to the many different applications of photonics. Examples of career paths include research and development within the private industrial sector as well as within the public domain. However, career options related to other occupational tasks—as for example process control and management or optimization or processing of advanced technology where photonics is either an end product or used as a tool to process other end products—are also possible.
