The rapid expansion of digital media technologies is constantly generating new types of applications. Consider how YouTube online videos, Spotify streaming of music, smartphone apps built on top of Google Maps, microblogs Twitter messages, user generated content in Wikipedia or Facebook social media have all transformed our lives dramatically within only a few years. Likewise, what used to be called media companies are now rather technological solutions operating across multiple platforms, which enable sharing of digital media content as well as analysis of user behaviour based on the large amounts of data that is being generated.

Within this area characterized by continuous change there is a need for engineers who will not be constrained by shifting technologies, but rather have attained strong technical competences for developing novel types of interaction between people and software—reflected in e.g. game design, personalization of media content, or smartphone apps which based on sensors are able to model how we perceive the world around us.
