Description

From vampires to sirens, shape-shifters to ghosts, mermaids to zombies, what do monsters tell us about ourselves? The current fascination with monster-driven literature, TV shows and movies is only the most recent iteration of the importance of monsters in our cultural imagination. The existence of monsters as cultural embodiments of the unknown in the Middle Ages, before modern scientific advancements were able to explain natural phenomena, is unsurprising. But what do monsters say about identity formation and how the world can and should be understood after the Enlightenment, during an age of supposed reason? This course will focus on this paradox of the monster in a post-Enlightenment world in literature from 19th century Germany (in translation) and England. This class is taught in English and is intended for students interested in literature. Where German language skills exist, students are encouraged to read the German texts in the original. The course will be taught over 4 weeks in July. The course will be conducted as a seminar. The instructor will lecture part of the time, but more class time will be spent in discussion than in lecture. Students will be assigned days on which to identify discussion topics and lead discussion. The course will have a dedicated website, on which they will post their course collaborations and individual efforts.
