In today’s business world the survival of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) can depend on their abilities to utilise the advantages of globalisation and/or to defend against its negative effects. Quite often internationalising the firm is the only way ahead. However, companies contemplating internationalisation need to understand that there are advantages to it (from supply, demand and innovation points of view) but also costs involved in entering a new market and managing that process.
The course will guide the students through the steps a small company should take before and after deciding to expand their activities beyond the boundaries of their home country. By using the case study of a fictional SME, operating in the electronics sector, the students will have to decide about the best way to internationalize this company and select the country (or countries) offering the best potential for its further development. To achieve the competences to solve the case, the students will learn about the global business environment, comparing countries based on culture, risk and resources related factors, using and applying several frameworks, theories and databases. After carrying out a weighted analysis based on the real life information and data they collect as a small group, the students will present their findings to their peers.
This course will help students to critically analyse, evaluate and appraise the factors which constitute and influence the global business environment. They will learn about the complex and often unpredictable variables and contexts important to international business. Along the way the students will learn interesting, exciting and fascinating facts about several countries and the way they conduct business. The course will also provide students with critical awareness of the pervasive issues – including sustainability, globalisation, corporate social responsibility, diversity, business innovation and risk management.
