Consider your desktop as a canvas. Spark dialogue through making things. This course regards thinking as handwork, an intellectual activity that informs our understanding of the world. In the words of artist, hacker and scholar Natalie Jeremijenko, “We think with things.” The course program engages research and artistic practice that takes into account the materiality of computation, in which images are algorithmically manipulated, reconfigured and presented in this technologically mediated visual culture.
This course emphasises both practical making and reflexive thinking, in which theories and practice mutually inform each other. Through the intensive format of daily seminars, discussions, and guided studio time, students will build and exhibit a project of a self-defined research topic, critically examining and reflecting the complex computational world that is socially, politically, economically and culturally entangled. The course encourages participants who are interested in getting their hands dirty, thinking beyond and behind the interface, and have an open attitude towards collaboration. We invite critical makers across the fields of Software Studies, Media Studies, Information Technology, Visual Anthropology, Critical Design, and Studio Art and beyond to enrol.
