This course addresses the role of project-based organisations as a means for innovation, growth, and managing complexity. We will focus in particular on the way firms use projects to stimulate innovation and creativity, as well as manage growth and complexity. Projects are pervasive in a wide range of firms and industries. They range from short projects developed by a small number of individuals to long lasting projects involving a range of stakeholders. Such stakeholders include organisations such as public policy makers and universities, as well as firms that may be competitors outside the project. It examines several elements of projects, including:
  1. Project Success: in what ways can we measure project success? How does this differ depending on whether we consider long term vs. short term success? What does success mean for individuals, firms, and other stakeholders?

  2. Managing Projects: what dimensions of project management are key? How does the novelty, technology, complexity, and pace of the project affect the way it should be managed?

  3. Reinventing Projects: what is the role of projects in managing creativity and innovation? What are emerging trends in managing projects in non-traditional ways? How can organisations learn and innovate using projects?

  4. Projects in a Digital World: The rise of digital technologies has affected firms not only in Information and Communication-based industries, but an increasing number of sectors. How do such digital technologies affect projects, and how can firms use and respond to digitisation?
