Did you know that starch from our diet can be degraded in the stomach, small intestine and large intestine and subsequently taken up to our blood as lactate, glucose, or short chain fatty acids, respectively? Did you know that time from feeding has a major impact on which nutrients are available for production in monogastric animals, and at which quantity? Did you know that energy from starch may be used to very different metabolic processes like 1) oxidation in muscles, 2) glucose homeostasis in plasma due to liver uptake/release, or 3) synthesis of lactose and milk fat in the mammary gland?
Utilisation of dietary nutrients depends greatly upon physiological stage! This course will give you a deeper understanding of the fate of dietary nutrients using a quantitative approach, where sows are surgically modified and used to adress a specific research question.
