The world we live in today is captured very aptly in the acronym Vuca: volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. In this “New Normal”, organizations need to show sustained performance while simultaneously showing extreme care for all stakeholders. This is not possible unless buiness leaders understand the importance of organization design in VUCA world. Professional organizations require leadership, strategy, adaptability and coordination on a scale never before imagined. In this regard the major challenge is, “how to design a work organization that can quickly adapt with the dynamic market realities?’’ The employees’ and customers’ need and demand are ever changing and competitors adopt better ways of doing business which create a pressure on the organization’s capability to align with the internal processes (structure, system and culture) and external challenges (competitors and customers) to remain efficient and effective. Organizations need managers with high such a leadership potential right at the entry stage. Hence, I have designed the course on “Leading and Designing Organizations” to help the leaders to understand how organizations work from inside in terms strategies, structure, system, culture and people management practices and how managers can develop some of the required competencies to redesign a company.
Thus this course provides students with the social science tools needed to solve organizational problems and prepare leaders to understand how to organize the task, coordinate across the teams, motivate the human capital of the firm, manage the social networks, develop emotional intelligence and conflict management skills, and initiate organizational transformation. In cases studies of several successful organizations McKinsey, 3M, GE, P&G, and startups, it is seen that empowered employees and the design of a learning organization often improve productivity, profits and sustainability. As a starting point, this course is organized around three different perspectives on organizations: the strategic design perspective, the political perspective, and the cultural perspective. Each of them offers a different angle on what is an organization, and each offers different tools for action. I have designed and developed business games and selected case studies that are relevant to imbibe such competencies among the participants. As the part of my teaching philosophy, I believe in making things simple and comfortably better for the students.
