Globalisation continuously increases contact between people from different parts of the world. Multinational companies, institutions and organisations are increasingly located in many parts of the world and employ people with different cultural backgrounds who have to work across locations and together in global teams. Global teams are crucial for knowledge transfers within companies and organisations. To make them effective we need to look at the intercultural challenges they experience. Research shows that efficiency increases if employers effectively develop the intercultural competence of their staff. This is where they need expertise in intercultural competence.
After graduating many of you will find jobs that demand a high level of intercultural competence. To understand these contexts and the challenges involved you need particular theoretical insights, analytic skills and a specific set of attitudes.

This course will give you theories, analytic tools and competence to act professionally as individuals or as brokers in culturally complex situations. Based on theories from anthropology, intercultural communication, and cross-cultural interaction as well as qualitative methods, the course will equip you with tools and skills that enable you to successfully act and communicate in intercultural settings and not least to advise others on how to interact in culturally complex situations. To develop your intercultural competence for professional settings we will be working with authentic cases from the international business world and apply various simulation games for you to reflect on your own reactions to intercultural complexities.
