Human rights: We all have them, we’ve all heard of them, and we know that there are laws to protect them. But we hear equally often about war crimes, refugee crises, persecution of sexual minorities and children suffering starvation and preventable diseases. So does the international human rights law legal system work – and why or why not? This course is designed to give you an understanding of the international human rights legal system and the challenges it faces.

The focus of the course is on the international level and importantly, on current issues facing the international system. This means that you will be working actively with cases, examples, and issues that governments, lawyers, NGOs and the United Nations are also discussing, in addition to background cases to help you understand how the system has worked in the past.

The aim is to help you think critically – from a legal perspective – about the messages you see and hear about human rights in the media, and about the international system generally. In addition to an introduction to the international legal system, human rights bodies, and substantive rights in international law, the course will offer three related, specialised topics through which to examine international human rights law in practice: international criminal law, refugee law, and transitional justice. The precise cases and examples to be used will be determined according to current events. An introduction to international law or human rights is an advantage, though not a requirement for taking this course. We look forward to seeing you in class, summer 2017!
