Description

GAME.PLAY.DESIGN is an interdisciplinary, playful and process-oriented Summer School that revolves around digital games, digital gameplay and digital game design. The lecturers are themselves interdisciplinary in their approach having professional basis in media studies, information studies, digital design, educational design, interaction design, aesthetics, experience economy and rhetoric. The aim of the course is to design, discuss and critically reflect on digital games through the lens of the student’s profession in a generative way. Through discussing and playing with core concepts in gamedesign and -analysis, through designing and playing our own games, as well as through critically rethinking the role and potentials of games for and in society, the course grapple with digital games as phenomenon, practice and design. Through working in interdisciplinary groups, students engage the potentials of gamedesign through theoretical, empirical and practical work. The aim of the course is to combine theory and practice in playful and innovative ways in order to rethink the potential of a certain context (e.g. a firm, a library, a school, a store, a playground or a family home) through gamedesign.
All Game.Play.Design projects are carried out in interdisciplinary groups, composed as to amplify the output in both gameplay thinking and design. Last time the course ran, the interdisciplinary groups’ work resulted, among other things, in a company buying and developing a student group gamedesign concept, a student developed gamedesign exhibited at the Storm P Museum in Copenhagen, good press coverage and employment of students in game companies.
In 2016 the course has a special focus on 'ReThink(ing) gameplay' in tribute to Aarhus being the European Capital of Culture.
"RETHINK means that we build on what currently exists, while also exploring whether things can be done differently. The theme RETHINK provides Aarhus2017 with the opportunity to create a “cultural laboratory” in the whole region where innovation and alternative solutions can develop and take root."
We will through 'Game.Play.Design' work proactively with this, rethinking the meaning, design, interactions and experience that gameplay can hold.
The course will end in an exhibition and reception at Dokk1 simultaneously functioning as the course examination.
Weeks 1 and 3 (25 - 29 July and 8 - 12 August): Lectures and Workshops at the campus. Weeks 2 and 4 (1 - 5 August and 15 - 19 August): Project Weeks.
