Description

In recent years, global market scenarios have changed rapidly. The levels of competition have intensified to the point where costs often become the key competitive issue. Today many firms are faced with a wide spectrum of different equipment and system choices, involving substantial levels of investments and risks, with strategic implications for the firm as a whole. Companies live and die on their ability to discover new businesses and create ongoing value for customers. This has always been true. Competitive pressure is increasing, fueled by rapid changes in technology and society. The Egan Report (1996) stated “Lean Production is the generic version of the Toyota Production System (TPS), recognized as the most efficient system in the world today”. Lean thinking describes the core principles underlying this system that can also be applied to every other business activity - from designing new products and working with suppliers to processing orders from customers. This part of the course on Lean Enterprise deals with Lean decisions that have long-term and irreversible impact on a firm’s profitability and deal with the rapidly changing environment. The objective of this course is to acquire knowledge of:
  1. Understanding the importance of Lean systems and develop a road map for enterprises to transform themselves to Lean Enterprises.

  2. Adaptation of production and administration processes driven solely by value addition and eliminating activities that do not add value

  3. Self-regulated flows for work, material, information and cash

  4. Direct decision-making at the point of value creation

  5. Capacity for rapid displacement of the enterprise to cope with new market conditions
