Description

Infectious diseases are easily spread between countries and continents, and infections like SARS and avian flu shows that surveillance and control of epidemics are of international importance.The course will give an introduction to major infectious diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, HIV, yellow fever and others with emphasis on geographical distribution, difference in morbidity and mortality between different parts of the world, clinical signs and symptoms, diagnosis, prevention and control. Advice to travelers will be discussed and appropriate investigations in immigrants will be reviewed.Emphasis will be on the difference in incidence, prevalence, morbidity and mortality between countries and continents. Appropriate control programs will be discussed, both at national and international level.The course will teach practical diagnostics of intestinal parasites and blood parasites like malaria through "hands-on" practical’s and will give an introduction to so called “rapid tests”. The course will enable the student to work in other countries especially developing countries providing background knowledge of disease prevalence, principles of diagnosis, treatment and a brief introduction to community control and prevention.

About the Degree

This is a summer course that counts 5 or 10 ECTS. 

Admission

  • You must be enrolled in a university programme at the time of the AU Summer University
  • If you are applying for admission to AU Summer University courses at the Master level, you must hold a relevant Bachelor's degree (or as a minimum 180 ECTS in your study programme
  • The application deadline is March 15th
