DescriptionThe two-year MSc programme in Sustainable Tropical Forestry (SUTROFOR in short) gives you the best instruction in the field of tropical forestry in Europe. You work with the growing challenges in contemporary tropical forestry in a global context, and you aquire valuable real-life experience by doing field work in a tropical country.
During the programme, you acquire international experience and intercultural understanding that make you capable of working with tropical forestry in countries and cultures all over the world.
You become an expert in the connection between the exploitation of tropical forest and nature areas for profitable production that can benefit a local community on the one hand and the preservation of biodiversity and the environment for the benefit of the global society on the other hand.
About the degreeSustainable Tropical Forestry is part of the EU-funded Erasmus Mundus programme. It is offered by a consortium of five European universities: Bangor University, Technische Universität Dresden, AgroParisTech, University of Padova and University of Copenhagen. You are required to study at two of these universities. Which one you choose, will depend on the academic profile you want.
Career OpportunitiesSUTROFOR graduates work in companies or organisations dealing with sustainable tropical forestry, development and natural resources, such as for instance CARE or a consultancy company. Others work for NGOs, international organisations like WWF, FAO or UNEP, or in a ministry or governmental agency. Successful students will also be able to apply to high-level international PhD programmes.
AdmissionThe SUTROFOR Masters Course is open to non-EU and EU students.
The SUTROFOR Consortium has developed a common set of admission criteria as well as joint application procedures:
- A good first university degree
- High proficiency in English
- Strong personal statement of motivation
- Good recommendations from two references, of which at least one is academic

It is possible to be admitted to the SUTROFOR course, even though you are not awarded a scholarship. You will then have to cover SUTROFOR participatory costs yourself.

TuitionThere is a tuition fee for all full-time degree students the size of which depends upon whether you are a citizen within or without EU/EAA/Switzerland.
SUTROFOR scholarshipsThere are two kinds of Erasmus Mundus scholarships in the SUTROFOR programme. Which you can apply for depends on your nationality and whether you have been living in Europe or not in the recent past.

Note: SUTROFOR is an Erasmus Mundus programme. You can only submit a total of three Erasmus Mundus applications for each application round counting both Master and PhD applications.In the eventual case that a student applies to more than three Erasmus Mundus programmes he/she will be excluded from the selection for an Erasmus Mundus Scholarship.
