International students in Denmark

Headline

Our programmes are taught by a number of distinctive musical personalities who also play defining roles as lecturers an/or performing artists on the Danish and international scene. We offer artistic bachelor and masters programmes in jazz/contemporary rhytmic music, classical music, electronic music and sound art, music pedagogic and church music. Besides that we are the only academy in Denmark offering degree programmes in folk/traditional music and film scoring.

The study year is structured to allows individual lessons, ensemble playing electives and project weeks to integrate naturally. Our basic philosophy is that the development of the best possible instrumental/vocal skills underpins the development of an artistic and personal way of expression – in performance and composing as well as in teaching.

All of this is reinforced by a large number of clinics, master classes and talks with exceptional artists from home and abroad.

Furthermore teaching in artistic entrepreneurship helps you to put your music into action. To be a musician is not only a matter of being able to play the music but also being able to put the music into action in a variety of settings. We will do our utmost to help you develop your musical and professional skills while you grow as an artist in your own right.

The programme for classical musicians in Esbjerg is targeted at students who want a versatile career as a performing musician at the highest level, a teacher and an entrepreneur.

At the bachelor programme you will acquire the knowledge, skills and competences to work as a musician and entrepreneur in the world of music. The programme aims to develop your unique musical talent and to reach a high level of artistic quality.

The majority of SDMK students eventually become both musicians and teachers, and all bachelor programmes therefore comprise both artistic and pedagogical courses. Add to this general courses that support the students’ artistic and pedagogical development.

The programme for classical musicians in Esbjerg is targeted at students who want a versatile career as a performing musician at the highest level, a teacher and an entrepreneur.

After graduating from the Academy many trained musicians build a career that consists of a range of elements. Motivated by their passion for music and strong ‘musichood’, they e.g. combine concert activities with teaching at music schools or MGK and work on their own artistic projects.

Regardless of whether you perform, teach or inspire others, your ‘musichood’ is central to your work, and your main instrument or voice is therefore the focal point of the programme. In addition to qualifying teaching in your main instrument, chamber music and ensemble playing are both part of the programme, just as students at the programme participate in projects involving professional ensembles.

Furthermore, the programme includes teaching within a range of subjects that will help you to leave different types of musical imprints on the surrounding world.

You will thus receive both theoretical and practical teaching in pedagogy, entrepreneurship and a series of supporting subjects that enable you to build a career as a performing musician, a teacher at various levels and an entrepreneur who devises, launches and completes artistic projects.

In addition to timetabled classes, the programme may include masterclasses with internationally acknowledged musicians, cross-disciplinary projects, study trips etc.

Graduates from the programme may build a career as professional classical musicians/singers, teachers, communicators or freelance musicians.

Contemporary creative artist (CCA)

Advanced Postgraduate Diploma of , 120 ECTS

Campus Esbjerg
Duration 2 years
Tuition per term (Non-EU/EAA/CH) 6325 EUR
Website https://www.sdmk.dk/en/studies/study-programmes/contemporary-creative-artist-cca
The advanced postgraduate diploma programme focusses on developing soloist competences and stage skills at the highest international artistic level.

This means that the student must honor the demands of all sides of the professional music business.

The development and nurturing of the student's unique talent are the focal points of the programme, which is evident in the planning of the course.

CCA is a flexible soloist programme with an overall artistic/compositional work-creating and work-communicating aim.

The programme has an overall artistic/compositional work-creating and work-communicating aim. The creating/compositional aspect constitutes, as a main subject, a leading element alongside the development of the student’s own instrumental/vocal skills.

CCA is a flexible soloist programme, which aside from being open to all genres also represents an opportunity to work with other musicians as well as individually. The students’ artistic projects may, after admission to the programme, involve other soloist students during the two years of the programme. This includes both the same group of fellow students and other constellations across genres.

The ambition is thus that the programme contributes to promoting collective and co-creating elements as well as the genre-open approach that characterised the SDMK Esbjerg Campus, which encompasses both classical, rhythmic, electronic, church and folk music.

The programme profile is evident both from the entrance exam and the debut concert, which assign weight to achieving a great artistic/compositional, work-creating and work-communicating result and a high instrumental/vocal level.

Film Composition | Master 2 years

Film Composition

Master (2 years) of , 120 ECTS
Music and performing arts

Institution Danish National Academy of Music
Campus Esbjerg
Duration 2 years
Tuition per term (Non-EU/EAA/CH) 8716 EUR
Website https://www.sdmk.dk/en/studies/study-programmes/film-composition
The master’s programme in film composition represents a unique opportunity to develop the necessary skills to compose and edit music for films, TV and video.

The master’s programme aims to develop the students’ compositional skills and insight, while giving them a deeper understanding of the effect of music considering the emotional and dramatic elements of the visual media for which the music is written.

The combination of musical skills, modern technical competences and dramatic interpretation and understanding will enable you to face the challenges of this exciting and demanding way of using the emotional musical palette og interpretation skills.

Through the programme courses composers, sound directors, film editors and directors from Denmark and abroad develop the students’ artistic and professional competences.

SDMK constantly expands its collaboration with the world’s film industry by engaging leading film professionals to teach at the school as well as by collaborating with the National Film School of Denmark with whom we collaborate closely within all aspects of film production through ongoing projects, exercises and courses.

The primary responsibility for the programme rests with Associate Professor Karsten Fundal, Niklas Schak and Senior Associate Professor Marc Bernstein. In addition, Film Composer Kåre Bjerkø is affiliated with the programme and gueat teachers include Peter Albrechtsen, Jonas Struck, Niklas Schmidt , Flemming Nordkrog, Hans Erik Phillip and Jørgen Lauritsen.

The students may use the academy’s professional sound studio and make recordings in our amazing concert hall, where you may engage your fellow students as studio musicians.

Former graduates currently work in the national and international film music industry on their own projects with e.g. DR and Nordisk Film and as assistants for e.g. Jacob Groth, Frans Bak, Lucio Godoy and Halfdan E.

The main focus of the programme is the production of film and that film composition is a branch of film production and not a self-sustaining area in the traditional musical sense. The subject of composition thus includes a large degree of specialisation. In addition, the students may choose to specialise within areas such as instrumentation and relevant ancillary subjects.

The programme will mainly include courses within the following subject areas:
  • Composition
  • Film analysis
  • Orchestration
  • Computer techniques
  • Dramaturgy
  • Editing techniques
  • Film mix
The programme includes both class and individual teaching. Graduates obtain the title cand.musicae.

Jazz is the main offset for the programme, but we expect you to develop your own style being capable of playing all genres. The teaching is a combination of practical courses that improve your vocal or instrumental skills and theoretical courses, which offer insight into the basis of music. At the same time, the programmes place great emphasis on ensemble playing, and through music pedagogical courses students obtain teaching qualifications.   In addition to timetabled classes, the programme may include masterclasses with internationally acknowledged musicians, cross-disciplinary projects, study trips etc.

Main instrument/voice

Jazz/pop-students at SDMK receive teaching in both your main instrument/voice as well as specialised subjects related to your main instrument. During the individual teaching the main subject teacher will focus on musical, pedagogical and technical issues.

General subjects

In addition, a series of general courses will give you a theoretical foundation and help you look at music from different angles than the performing one, just as students at the programme will be introduced to administrative and PR-related aspects of working as a musician. During ensemble training you will learn to participate in various musical contexts, just as the programme as a whole will give you a chance to participate in cross-disciplinary projects.

Career Opportunities

At the bachelor programme you will acquire the knowledge, skills and competences to work as a musician and entrepreneur in the world of music. The programme aims to develop your unique musical talent and to reach a high level of artistic quality.

The majority of SDMK students eventually become both musicians and teachers, and all bachelor programmes therefore comprise both artistic and pedagogical courses. Add to this general courses that support the students’ artistic and pedagogical development.

Graduates from the programme often find work as musicians in bands and orchestras, as performing musicians, as teachers at folk high schools, music schools, primary and lower secondary schools, day folk high schools, institutions of higher education, continuation schools etc., as orchestra, ensemble or choir directors, as heads of music schools, as cultural or musical communicators etc.
