Description 

“Crossing Borders” is a four-month international course specially designed for both foreign and Danish students.
The course will provide students with skills, knowledge and experiences in order to increase their intercultural competence, their ability to address cultural diversity in educational settings and their ability to describe, analyse and develop educational practice in an intercultural perspective.

With the reflective practitioner as guiding principle the course will facilitate active learning both inside and outside the classroom. Through excursions, fields studies and practical training you will observe and explore pedagogical practice, and in lectures, workshops and group work you will be encouraged to discuss and reflect upon your experiences.

The course focuses on cultural diversity in early years education and will provide knowledge about and understanding of a culturally responsive pedagogy in an international perspective. As part of the overall theme the course will put emphasis on educational institutions serving minorities.

The subjects are:

1.
Crossing Borders (5 ECTS)
- Introduction to Denmark (history, culture and society) and to the Danish-German border region
- Comparing educations and systems for early years education
- Danish language course

2.
Cultural Diversity in Education (10 ECTS)
Globalisation, migration from all parts of the world and the historical shifting of borders has turned the European map into a patchwork where people with different cultural backgrounds live together. In educational settings cultural diversity is manifest both as a challenge and a possibility for the educator. This module will focus on cultural diversity as a resource in education and provide the students with knowledge and skills needed for addressing diversity in educational settings.
Main themes are:
- Concepts of culture
- Minorities, language and identity
- Pedagogical theory and practice in an intercultural perspective
- Field work methodology and practice

3.
Educational Development Project (10 ECTS)
This module will build upon the knowledge and experience gained in the previous module on culture and education. The module will introduce the student to development work as a systematic approach for changing and renewing educational practice – for instance in relation to addressing cultural diversity in education.
Main themes are:
- Scientific methods for analysing educational practice and identifying potential areas of development
- Forms of documentation, evaluation and dissemination in educational development work
- Observation and investigation of existing educational practice in institutions/schools
- Group project work focusing on educational development


4. Practical Training Period (5 ECTS)
3 weeks practical training in a Dan-ish institution/school or an institution/school belonging to the German speaking minority in Denmark.

Description

The Department for Teacher Education, Campus Esbjerg, provides a 4-month modular course specially designed for both foreign and Danish students. The classes are organised as lectures, self-studies and with a variety of methods with focus on practice-oriented exercises, case studies and research findings. As special needs education is a constantly evolving field, recent and cutting-edge research and topical debates will enter classroom discussions and other teaching and learning activities.

Aim
The student is able to plan, implement, evaluate and develop inclusive teaching sequences for special-needs learners facing severe challenges in non-adapted learning environments.

Course content
Special education needs and inclusive teaching is meant to impart to students’ professional skills and a professional judgement in planning, implementing and evaluating teaching students who find themselves challenged by the learning environment of regular classrooms so as to be able to consider special needs, challenges and resources of individual learners vis-à-vis resources offered institutionally.

Description

“Living and Learning Together” is a four-month international modular course, specially designed to foreign students. The course combines lectures, seminars, workshops and individual studies under guidance, excursions, school visits, field visits and practicing periods.

The course provides you with skills, knowledge and experience in order to increase your intercultural competence, i.e. the ability to live and work in heterogeneous groups.

You will become aware of qualities of your own as well as the qualities of other education systems, enabling you to teach in a reflective, innovative and creative manner.

Short Descriptions of the Course Modules:

1. Education and Culture in Europe (compulsory for all) 10 ECTS
This module consists of :
  • A general introduction to Denmark, Danish history, culture and society and a Danish language course 
  • Project work called EDUtopia where students learn from eachother’s educational systems and attempt to synthesize the most optimal education system with inspiration from eachother. IT-tools in this project 
  • School experience (two weeks): Where you will observe the Danish school and maybe you can do teaching as well. 
  • LEGO BuildToExpress – How to use LEGO in the classroom as a pedagogical tool.
  • Learn to be an International Coordinator by preparing an International week together with the International coordinator of University College South Denmark.

2a. Creative Learning in Schools and the Freedom Writers peda-gogy. (Elective module) 10 ECTS
  • Students focus on the creative and “aesthetic” learning processes. You will work hands-on with art, filmmaking, pictures, storytelling and roleplays and a lot more.

Attached to this module University College South Denmark has a qualified teacher from the Freedom Writers Academy in the USA. This course will focus on writing as a means for understanding one-self and at times you might feel that this is getting very personal – So be prepared to get a deep understanding of yourself and the conditions of human life in a late-modern society.

2b. Outdoor Learning and Living for World Citizenship (Elective module) 10 ECTS

  • We will move outside the classroom in this module. You will live for three - four days in a “Iron Age village” as such looked like and worked in the years 500 (B.C.) – 850 (A.C.). We will go back to nature to learn about how to take care of nature in the theoretical light of “World Citizenship”. You will also trek along the old “Oksevej” (Ox road) and you will experience how to make fire yourself and many other things! You will also learn about plants and the landscape in order to pass that on to kids in schools in many different sub-jects.

2c. English (elective module) 10 ECTS
  • You will follow a module with Danish students studying to become English teachers. You must be an English language teacher student yourself to choose this module.

About the Degree

English speaking instructors and experts participate in the course, but the main language of instruction is Danish. The first semester will be taught exclusively in English. Students unfamiliar with the Danish language will have the opportunity to participate in an intensive Danish course during the first two semesters alongside the regular classes. As a result of the intensive Danish course, the students are expected to communicate satisfactory in Danish after the first year of study.   

Up to one semester can be spent at a foreign university cooperating with University College South Denmark Bachelor´s programme. 
As part of the education there will also be one semester of supervised professional experience. This could take place for instance in a private company in you home country, as long as it is approved by University College South Denmark.

"Modern Market Communication" is a four-month Erasmus international modular course, specially designed for international students. The course is a combination of lectures, workshops and individual studies under guidance. The course combines Business Administration, Personal Communication and Media Production.

The semester consists of 3 modules, each of 10 ECTS.

MODULE 1: BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION
Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Business Statistics and Globalization. Do you dream of doing international business? And if yes, do you agree, that it is advisable to understand basic economics? In this module you will get a broad understanding of economics and law, which will enable you to become more successful in your business life.

MODULE 2: PERSONAL COMMUNICATION
Sales, Networking, and Negotiation Management. Learn how to be a better negotiator and networker. How do you increase your chances of getting a “yes” tothe deal? What is the nature of management? These – and other – questions will be answered in this exiting module.

MODULE 3: MEDIA PRODUCTION

This module offers basic introduction to media productions with an emphasis on video for the web and social media. "Reaching for the stars - improving health care in a global perspective" is a three-month international course for students studying nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, biomedical laboratory science and midwifery.

The course consists of two supplementary parts: an interprofessional module (part one) followed by a module on health care sciences and health care practice including clinical studies within the overall theme of the course. (part two).

The interprofessional module (part one) will focus on different ways of improving health care, addressing three themes: welfare technology, safe and qualitybased health care, individual and cultural needs in health care,

The module on health care sciences and health care practice (part two) will be based on the knowledge and experiences gained from module one, focusing on the relation between health care research and health care practices.

The course will provide the students with skills, knowledge and experiences in order to increase their interculturel competences, their understanding of interprofessional approaches to health care and their critical, reflective and analytical approach to various health care issues in a global perspective.

Teaching and learning activities will be a combination of lectures, dialogue based teaching, self-directed learning, group work and individual studies under guidance.

Description

The Bachelor of Education is a four-year programme, which will qualify you to be a teacher for primary and lower secondary levels in Denmark in three subjects. The programme mixes theoretical instruction in teaching subjects and educational studies with practical experiences of teaching. The first year you are to choose between studying to become a teacher of English or German as a foreign language, and the language of instruction is English or German. You will be integrated in a class of Danish students wanting to become teachers of English or German. You will also be studying modules in psychology and education taught in English, as well as participating in the first period of teaching practice at a school. During the first year, you will receive intensive training in the Danish language at the local language centre, planned in cooperation with the college. (Read more about language)

From the second year and onwards you will follow most of the curriculum in Danish; however, there will still be some modules offered in English. There will be educational modules during the 3 years, e.g. teaching skills and classroom management, special needs education, school and citizenship, general education.
Furthermore, you are to choose two more subjects as your teaching subjects, and you can choose among the following subjects: mathematics, science, physics/chemistry, geography, biology, English, German, art, music, home economics, sports, history, social science, religion. (read more about the Structure and Curriculum) The academic year runs from Mid-August to December (autumn semester) and from Mid-January to Mid-May (spring semester). Exams take place in June and the semester ends around July 1. Teacher education in Haderslev has a strong profile in using new technologies in teaching and learning, thus the use of interactive boards is an integrated part of classroom teaching. One of the characteristics for the Danish way of teaching and learning is a friendly and informal atmosphere, which is highly appreciated by our international students. The syllabus is a mixture of lectures, group work, student presentations, and project oriented learning.

About the Degree

The language of instruction for this programme is English for the first year. Concomitant to your initial year you will receive intensive training in the Danish language at the local language centre.
