Description

The course is a four months exchange programme directed towards students studying to become teachers in primary and lower secondary schools. The exchange programme is a mixture of lectures, group work, student presentations, and project oriented learning.

The programme is based on the fundamental belief that democracy is the cornerstone of the European community currently and in the future. The aim is therefore to understand the concept of democracy and why and how does one raise pupils in schools to become democratic citizens?

Through the compulsory courses: Theory of Education, General Didactics and Democracy and School Practice students will be guided by experienced teachers and will receive training in planning, implementing and evaluating teaching for different age groups in the chosen subjects.

Career Opportunities

The course gives the student the opportunity to design their own study programme and specialise in a field of their own choice. By choosing from the many different options of specialisation within the framework of the programme, students can tailor-fit their education.

There are many opportunities in the field of teaching, examples being: Teaching younger or older pupils, becoming an all-round-teacher or a specialist, specialising in teaching sciences, international dimensions and specialising in reading and literary pedagogy.

About the Degree

The target group of the exchange programme is primarily students under ERASMUS and NORDPLUS mobility programmes, but also students from all other parts of the world are most welcome. The short-term programme is taught in English and is part of the full degree; The Professional Bachelor Programme in Teacher Education. The full degree is only offered in Danish.

A Professional Bachelor’s Degree in Denmark is awarded 180-240 ECTS on the basis of a 3-4 year programme. In the programme, practice placements must be included
equalling no less than 1 semester (30 ECTS) and often much more. The programme culminates in a bachelor project.

Middelfartvej, Odense

Description

The Department is situated 4 km off the city centre of Odense - a very lively city with many exchange and international students from all over the world. One of the characteristics of the Danish way of teaching and learning is a friendly and informal atmosphere, which is highly appreciated by the exchange students studying in Denmark.

The exchange programme offers a great opportunity to meet young people from other countries while studying in an international atmosphere and engaging in group work, discussions and social networking with a focus on democratic citizenship in education and schools.

During the exchange programme there will be tutors to supervise the students, to involve them in various social activities and to help them meet local students. Some of the tutors are Danish and some of them are former exchange students who have later returned to UCL for a full teacher education

Odense is the third largest city in Denmark with a population of approximately 182 thousand inhabitants. Besides UCL, there are several other higher educational institutions with great numbers of exchange and internationals students. Odense is a city that is alive with music, theatre and concerts while also being one of the oldest cities in Denmark (1020th anniversary in 2008) as well as the hometown of the famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen.
