Imminent cancer breakthrough in Denmark

Danish scientists are heading a pioneering research project: a scanning procedure that can show immediately whether a patient's cancer will spread

In a few years' time, a new type of PET scans will be available at Danish hospitals that enable doctors to quickly decide whether a patient needs immediate aggressive cancer treatment. The project, which has just been awarded DKK 13.3 million from the Danish Council for Strategic Research.

The project is headed by Professor Andreas Kjær MD, consultant at Copenhagen University Hospital, and of the University of Copenhagen. "Specific medicine from the outset means that we can target particular properties of the cancer and thereby hopefully give patients a less aggressive therapy course and improved chances of survival," Professor Kjær says.
