The organisation behind the index, Transparency International, explains that the index shows that still many societies and governments need to give a much higher priority to corruption.

New UN report shows that Denmark has the most climate-friendly policies in the world

Denmark is currently the most climate-friendly country the world, with the most efficient policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prevent climate-change. This is the verdict of the United Nations' Climate Change Performance Index 2013.

Denmark achieves 72.61 points out of a possible 100 points for its climate efforts. Sweden in second place gets 69.37, while Portugal in third place gets 67.81. The report also shows that no country is doing enough to prevent climate-change and thus no country makes it to the top three.

Reducing greenhouse gases

The Climate Change Performance Index is prepared by the Climate Network Europe and the organization German Watch and is based mainly on figures for 2010. The report shows what different countries are doing politically to reduce CO2 emissions, focusing on renewable energy and energy efficiency. Denmark performs well, especially because it has made a positive effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, concludes the report.

Global overview shows room for improvement

While the report praises Denmark, it also shows that Denmark could be utilizing energy more efficiently in comparison to some other countries. Thus, the Climate Change Performance Index provides a comprehensive overview of CO2 emissions and where action should be taken to improve global and national climate polities.

Danish Ambassador: A Danish education is a good investment

Denmark Day offered the participating Chinese students a taste of Denmark and of the unique opportunities for combining a world-class education in Denmark with in-the-job training and career opportunities in internationally recognised Danish companies. The Danish ambassador to China, Mr. Friis Arne Petersen, opened the event and made it clear to Chinese students why a Danish education is a good investment in their future career:

“By studying in Denmark you acquire new skills and qualifications that are of great value when starting your career. You improve your employability - your chance of getting the job of your dreams. In short, a Danish university education is an investment in your future. Dear students, the Danish companies and universities are here for you, to provide you with knowledge and information you need - and to answer your questions”.

Copenhagen Business School (CBS) has received a USD 7 million donation from the A.P. Møller Foundation to attract international top researcher in entrepeneurship

From CBS' website:
A new ten-year grant creates the basis for CBS to employ an internationally recognised professor in entrepreneurship – and thus compete with the very best business schools in the world.

CBS demands an international capacity within the art of creating successful new companies – and a donation of DKK 40 million from the A.P.Møller and Chastine Mc-Kinney Møller’s Foundation for General Purpose now makes it possible for CBS to headhunt among the world’s leading experts.

– "We are extremely happy with this generous donation from the A.P. Møller Foundation. CBS finds that entrepreneurship should contribute to the economic growth that Danes can make a living from in the future, and we are now able to attract an international top researcher to benefit both students and the business community", says Per Holten-Andersen, President of CBS.

A new state of the art particle accelerator is now ready for use at Aarhus University. The accelerator marks a quantum leap in the exploration of life's smallest building blocks

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at Aarhus University now holds one of the world’s most powerful particle accelerators. On September 10, the new accelerator ASTRID 2 (following its predecessor ASTRID1) was showcased to the world.

A quantum leap in the exploration of the molecular world

ASTRID2 marks a quantum leap for Danish and international students and researchers in terms of their opportunity to obtain new knowledge about the smallest and most fundamental of life’s building blocks. The accelerator can accelerate particles to near the speed of light along its 46 meter long cylinders, hereby producing super intense shortwave light (radiation) which can be used to analyze everything from biological systems to connections on atomic scale.

Danish astronomers find sugar in the universe

Danish astronomers have found sugar - one of the ingredients of life - in a gas cloud surrounding a young star

A team of astronomers from the Niels Bohr institute in Denmark have detected sugar molecules in a gas cloud surrounding a young star only 400 light years from Earth, suggesting the possibility that life could evolve elsewhere in the universe.

The building blocks of living cells

The sugar molecules found is a simple form of sugar called glycolaldehyde, not much different to the sugar we put in coffee. While it is unclear exactly how glycoaldehyde is produced in space, the molecule is thought to play a key role in the chemical reaction that forms ribonucleic acid (RNA), a crucial biomolecule and building block in all living cells. This suggests that the precursors of biology can be present even before planets have begun forming.

Astronomers in Denmark have found simple sugar molecules (inset) around a sun-like star IRAS 16293-2422 located about 400 light years away in the Rho Ophiuchi star forming region, here shown in infrared light.

The precursors of life

The epochal discovery was made using the powerful ALMA radio telescopes, which enable the researchers to study in details the composition of the gas cloud sorrrounding the star. Besides glycolaldehyde, the researchers also found signs of more complex organic molecules, including ethylene glycol, methyl format and ethanol.

"The complex molecules in the cloud surrounding this newly formed star tells us that the building blocks of life may some of first to be formed, says research leader Jes Jørgensen of the Niels Bohr Institute at University of Copenhagen in Denmark. "One of the big questions is whether it is common to form these organic molecules early in the formation of stars and planets and how complex they can get before they are incorporated into new planets. This may tell us something about the possibility that life could arise elsewhere and whether the precursors of biology are present even before planets are formed".

As the newborn star develops, it heats up the inner parts of the rotating cloud of gas and dust, warming it to about room temperature, explain the researchers. This heating process evaporates the chemically complex molecules and forms gases that emit radiation that can be picked up by the sensitive radio telescopes.

“What is really exciting about our findings is that the ALMA observations reveal that the sugar molecules are falling in towards one of the stars of the system,” says team member Cécile Favre. “The sugar molecules are not only in the right place to find their way onto a planet, but they are also going in the right direction", says member of the research team Cécile Favre of Aarhus University in Denmark
